An unexpected anecdote from A

This is a story I heard from today’s palm reading client, A (44 years old).

One day in 2011, A found and bought The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing (by Marie Kondo/Sunmark Publishing), which at the time was just becoming a best-seller.

A thought the book was amazing, and later participated in a seminar by Marie Kondo. She also registered for private lessons—which Kondo was offering for a brief period of time—to learn more about her method of organizing.

Kondo then came over to A’s home in Tokyo and taught her one-on-one how to organize her things.

*Marie Kondo: Nicknamed “KonMari.” Organizing consultant.

Her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing became a hit not just in Japan but throughout the world, including in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and as of this writing in 2024, has become a massive worldwide hit, selling over 13 million copies in total, and showing no signs on stopping.
She was also selected in the “Artists” category of the 2015 edition of “The 100 Most Influential People” by the American magazine, TIME.

Kondo was organizing A’s home for the private lesson when…

Kondo came over to A’s home for her private lesson. As she was tidying up, she spotted on A’s bookshelf my (Yasuto Nishitani’s) books on palm reading, and various other subjects.

Seeing this, Kondo said, “A, that palm-reader Nishitani, he really is very accurate!” She went on:

“A few years ago (Note: When Kondo was 25 years old), Mr. Nishitani did a palm reading for me, and he told me I’d become famous at 27, that I’d be super successful. That’s what he told me, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Kondo is now 39 years old, but she had been 27 when the very first book she had ever written, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing (released January 15, 2011) became an explosive best-seller.

I had done a palm reading for Marie Kondo

Every time I saw her books piled high on tables at bookstores, I had thought to myself, “Man, what a popular young woman.”
I was stunned to find now that I had actually done a palm reading for her.

Although now that I think back… I think, “Oh, that was her. That was Marie Kondo.”

And it is incredibly gratifying to see that she has become famous not just in Japan, but worldwide!

She is living proof of something that I have mentioned several times in my books and in other places—that tidying your room and keeping it organized will bring good fortune into your life.

I look forward to seeing “master organizer” Marie Kondo’s career continue to blossom across the world!
