E comes to her third palm reading session with her husband
Today’s story is about E (45 years old), who came for her third palm reading session.
This time, she brought her husband (44 years old) for the first time, both of them coming all the way from the Tohoku region.
Her husband was a very honest and reliable business owner.
E’s first palm reading session as a single woman
E had come in her for her first palm reading session when she was not yet married.
She had gotten married at 30 (15 years ago), which means her first session with me was 16 years ago (when she was 29).
The prediction I made, upon reading her palms…
During this first session, I told her—still unmarried—the following about her marriage prospects.
(The story below is E’s retelling of the session.)
“You read my palms and said,
‘You’ve already met the man who will be your husband.’”
(The marriage prediction I made after reading the then-unmarried E’s palms.)
“I remember thinking, ‘I haven’t met a single man I’d want to marry.’”
“So how could I have already met him?”
I thought long and hard, but there wasn’t a single man I had already met that I would want to marry.
Meeting her now-husband
A while after that, I met my now-husband. And now, looking back…
I had actually met him just once, at a party a few of us had hosted at a friend’s house.
What Nishitani-sensei had said had been exactly right!”
“At the time, I didn’t think my husband would mean anything to me at all!”
When she had met him that first time, however, he was not what she would consider to be marriage material.
It seems that his look at the time was something completely different, almost unimaginable given his identity now as a polished business-owner.
It turned out he had been somewhat of a punk,
a vocalist and bassist in a rock band,
with a mohawk to top it all off!
Her impression of him had been terrible. All she remembered thinking was, “Man, that guy is scary!” She had treated him rather coldly, doing her best to keep her distance from him— something I found rather funny.
“She was so standoffish when I first met her,” her husband also recalled, laughing.
But those that are destined to be together come together anyway
But fate is a strange thing. It is what you would call, in Japanese, an “合縁奇縁,” or ai-en ki-en.
*Ai-en ki-en: A quirk of fate, or a circumstance in which two people are brought together into wedlock through strange and inscrutable means. Under this way of thinking, whether you are able to connect with someone on a deeper level is all dependent upon the strange and inscrutable power of fate.
E too had had her now-husband clearly inscribed in her palm lines long before they got married.
No matter how bad a first impression they make on you, you will find yourself drawn to the person who was born to be your spouse, and they to you, and the two of you will be brought together in marriage.
Fate truly is a strange thing.
And so this palm reading session began with a nice and lively conversation about how they had met, with her husband participating as well.
They looked very good together.
“I want to see a video of him with that mohawk,” I said
You couldn’t imagine, from how polished he seemed now, that E’s husband had ever had a mohawk.
I said to him,
“I would love to see you with this mohawk. There aren’t any videos of your performances on YouTube or anything?”
The attempt was in vain, however.
“No, fortunately, there aren’t any videos of it anymore.”
And that was that.
If there were a video, I would’ve loved to share it in this palm reading journal, just as a before-and-after.
Maybe they’ll find a video someday.
